Natural Disasters in St Vincent and the Grenadines over the past Ten (10) Years

Natural disasters have affected St. Vincent and the Grenadines in many ways. They have caused damage to people, livestock and property, and caused millions of dollars of losses to the island. 

Some of the natural disasters which affected SVG during the period 2007-2017 are:

October 2008- Storm surge from Hurricane Omar greatly affected the western coast of the island. There was widespread flooding, significant erosion and destruction and damage to coastal property and businesses in the Kingstown areas, Central Leeward, East St. George and the Northern and Southern Grenadines. The Cruise Ship terminal building received significant damage and the businesses housed in the terminal were evacuated. Approximately 20 shops housed in the Bus Terminal in the area of Little Tokyo were destroyed from Storm Surge and several others were damaged from the flood waters. Approximately ten fishing boats were destroyed and several reportedly received significant damage. 

October 30th 2010- Hurricane Tomas passed just north with 80mph winds while moving west causing quite a bit of damage with floods, landslides and sea surge.  The agricultural sector experienced widespread damage especially to bananas and plantains destroying almost 98% in the affected areas.  Tree crops and vegetables were also severely affected.  Damage was done to water, telecommunications and electricity.

April 2011- SVG also experienced a rainstorm in  about six months after Hurricane Tomas which caused severe flooding, landslides and the destruction to several bridges in some of the same areas affected by the hurricane.  This disaster cost about EC$84 million.

2013, December 24th/25th: Tropical trough, severe flooding in all flood plains country wide. Deaths and destruction recorded.
